Originally an obelisk stood on the square base, but now only the base remains. The base is carved with blackberry, rose, geranium and vine. The four front faces of the column are decorated with foliation. The original structure had foliated capital surmounted by a vase from which emerged carved flowers. Jethro Tinker, weaver, naturalist and autodidact was born near Stalybridge. A well-known local figure, Tinker was reputed during his studies to have amassed the largest collection of insects in the area. After his death in 1871, some of Tinker's 'friends and admirers' along with other 'lovers of science' wanted to erect a suitable memorial on the park, and a site was given by the council. Funds were raised to the tune of £80 by exhibiting Tinker's collections.
