The memorial was re-sited to its current position in 1875. It takes the form of an elaborately decorated Corinthian column topped with a bronze urn. There is a square pedestal with four bronze relief panels, one of them a portrait. The moulded plinth is set on a square base, surrounded by a cast iron railing. Some of the carving come from Sykes' own designs. Godfrey Sykes was a teacher at the Sheffield School of Design and supervised the decoration of the South Kensington Museum from 1859 to 1866.
