The sitter was born 10th June 1927 in Harrogate and the son of Captain Victor Michael Walsh and Audrey Walsh. He was educated at Sedbergh School and married Angela Beswick in 1952. Walsh joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as a Rifleman in early 1945 and spent the first two years in Northern Italy defending Trieste from Tito’s partisans. He was then posted to the Small Arms School as an instructor and then joined the Jungle Warfare School for two years in Malaya following the Emergency in the Country. After which he became Signals Officer for the 2nd Battalion of the KRRC and applied for secondment with the Parachute Regiment which was granted. He was posted to 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment based in Aldershot but then moved to Cyprus in 1956 and became heavily involved in anti-terrorist operations as officer commanding A Company. Later that year he was involved in the airborne assault on Port Said in Egypt as part of the Suez Crisis.
