Ludwig Mond was a German-born chemist and industrialist who founded the precursor companies to Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). He studied under Robert Bunsen at Heidelberg and worked in various chemical manufacturing facilities in Germany, the Netherlands and England before setting up the company, Brunner Mond, initially manufacturing soda ash. Mond, who became very wealthy, was a good friend and patron of the Royal Institution (Ri). In the early 1890s he purchased the house next to its Mayfair premises to expand its laboratories and suggested the establishment of the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory (DFRL). Before this, scientific research at the Ri had been carried out by researchers like Michael Faraday, working alone in their basement laboratories.
