This portrait is from the studio of Lely and shows Louise de Querouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth, and mistress of Charles II. She was a rival of Nell Gwyn and the two women exhibited no fondness for each other. There is a very similar, but more modest, portrait of the Duchess by Peter Lely in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
