This picture shows one of several locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Bath. The Canal was built between 1796 and 1810. In the pre-railway age, canals enabled goods to be easily transported between London and Bristol. Nash's picture is one of his views of Bath painted after his visit there in 1925. These are among the few urban views he ever painted, for he was inspired primarily by the English landscape. Nash had no formal art training. He was persuaded by his brother Paul to pursue an artistic career rather than one in journalism. He worked as a painter, book illustrator, and teacher. All his work was founded on a tranquil sense of order. Apart from being twice appointed an Official War Artist, he lived a simple life in Essex's Stour Valley for nearly 50 years.
