on the surrounding wall: Lions of the Great War; on the front of the pedestal: Between 1914 and 1918 more than a million soldiers / from South Asia served in the British Indian Army, / fighting with great courage for the freedom/of a country that was not their own / This statue of a Sikh soldier is dedicated to the brave / men of all faiths who served side by side and / honours their remarkable contribution to / the Great War and other conflicts; on the right side of the pedestal: The statue and public space funded by / Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick / and Sandwell Council / were unveiled in November 2018 / to commemorate / 100 years since the end of the / First World War; on the left side of the pedestal: Bonds formed on the fields of battle created / an enduring legacy of togetherness that / continues to enrich our society / The Sikh community has since integrated into the / heart of British society while retaining / a visible and distinct identity
