Kenneth Armitage was born in Leeds and studied at the Leeds College of Art from 1934 to 1937, and the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1937 to 1939. After lengthy wartime military service, he became Head of Sculpture at the Bath Academy of Art where he began to develop a unique personal style consisting mainly of figurative pieces which depicted the human form by means of flat surfaces modelled in plaster and cast in bronze. His semi-abstract pieces retained an interest in the human form. In 'Linked Figures', inspired by terracotta pieces he remembered seeing in the British Museum, he began to work out how two or three figures could be united into one mass by stylised clothing, solving, at the same time, the age-old problem of how to avoid using intrusive devices like struts and bridges in pieces with difficult extended limbs.
