'Commissioned not only because of his earlier associations with the City but also following his most interesting submissions in connection with the Sculpture Competition commemorating the Centenary of the Blaydon Races, which clearly indicated that his work was eminently suitable for this aspect of applied art'... 'The magnitude of this commission will be appreciated when it is realised that in the lift doors serving the administrative offices alone there are –480 motifs, no two of which are alike. The motifs are exquisite examples of metal sculptured relief, an applied art form which is now deservedly receiving greater recognition.' (extract from the 'Blue Book', ceremony of Acceptance of the First Stage of the Civic Centre, May 1963)
