Les Dawson, born at Collyhurst, near Manchester, was a stand-up comedian known especially for his appearances on television. He was also a prolific author and a competent pianist. He had lived in St Anne’s for some years. The statue includes Dawson’s characteristic King Water Rat badge on the lapel of his jacket and his LD signet ring. Ibbeson was selected on the strength of his statue of Eric Morecambe of 1999 erected on the Promenade at Morecambe.
