The monument celebrates the discoveries (including the discovery of the source of River Niger in 1827), of the Lander brothers, Richard and John. It is also a memorial to Richard, who died during an expedition. It is composed of a dressed granite, fluted Doric column on a square ashlar plinth, surmounted by a carved statue of Richard Lander. The site was donated by Sir Charles Lemon and the monument, designed by Philip Sambell, was erected by the builders Bowden of Helston in 1835. The statue of Richard Lander was carved by Neville Northy Burnard in 1852.
