Samuel John Lamorna Birch attracted by the reputation of the nascent Newlyn colony of artists, arrived in Cornwall in 1889. He initially took up lodgings at Boleigh farm at the head of the Lamorna valley, not far from Newlyn. It was from this area that he took his nickname of 'Lamorna' Birch, at the suggestion of Stanhope Forbes, to distinguish himself from another artist called Lionel Birch who painted in Newlyn. The son of a painter and decorator, he was entirely self-taught apart from 11 months studying in Paris in 1895. He was one of the first 'second generation' of artists to come to Cornwall and helped to form a Lamorna colony of artists as Forbes had done in Newlyn.
