This painting depicts an open air nocturnal village fête with dancing. From the title it would appear that the scene is set somewhere in France, most probably somewhere in Picardy where Mackie had a studio near Étaples, between 1904 and 1909. Anne Mackie, the artist’s widow, referred to the painting as 'La ducasse' in 1921. This expression is used in France to describe a popular centuries old festival or 'fête' that is held in many regions of France and has its origins in an ancient religious festival. In an 1888 publication by Andre Theuriet 'La vie rustique', 'La ducasse' is the name for the regional annual fête for the North of France.
