Head and shoulders portrait of King James wearing a bejewelled dark coat with an elaborately embroidered collar, a pearl and jewel chain of office and a dark hat embellished with gold set, square cut diamonds. This hat jewel is known as 'The Feather'. The fresh complexion of the King's skin and the redness and fullness of his beard suggests this portrait was painted not long after he came to the throne in 1603, as subsequent portraits appear to suggest that the King aged relatively swiftly after his appointment.
