Kate Nicholl was born in Zimbabwe and moved to Northern Ireland aged 12. She was the first person born outside Northern Ireland to be appointed as Lord Mayor for over 100 years. In 2016 Councillor Nicholl was co-opted onto Belfast City Council, and in 2019 was elected to represent the Balmoral DEA. Councillor Nicholl was elected as MLA for Belfast South in May 2022 leaving the role of Lord Mayor three weeks early and shortly before giving birth to her second child. During her term as Lord Mayor Councillor Nicholl focused on the health and wellbeing of children, endeavouring to bring the views of young people into council meetings. Councillor Nicholl dedicates this portrait to the midwives of Belfast.
