This three-quarter-length portrait depicts John Smith, bellman (town crier) of Warrington from 1887 to 1905, who died at his residence at 23 Stanley Street on 10th January 1905. It depicts him in his bellman uniform, posed against a plain background and wearing a top hat and holding a bell in his right hand and a newspaper in his left.
