John Ray, the most distinguished British naturalist of the seventeenth century, was born at Black Notley, near Braintree. Unveiled by David Bellamy, the botanist, on 11 October 1986, this statue was originally sited outside Barclays Bank in Bank Street; it was moved to its present position in the grounds of the museum in 1995.
