John Johnstone (1734–1795) was the fifth son of Sir James Johnstone of Westerhall in Dumfriesshire. He appears to have been a fairly tough businessman and made his fortune in the East India Company. He bought the Alva House estate from the Erskine family in 1775 and commissioned the architects Robert and James Adam to make improvements to his new home. They also designed a fine family mausoleum, which stands in Alva Old Kirkyard and is still used by his descendants. This group portrait shows John Johnstone, his sister Miss Betty Johnstone and their niece Miss Wedderburn. It is a copy of a painting by Sir Henry Raeburn which was probably painted c.1790. The copy is likely to have been painted by an unknown artist just before the original was sold by the family in 1906.
