This half-length portrait depicts Johnathan Christmas Thompson dressed in a jacket and a dark top and holding something in his right hand. An artist in his own right, Jonathan Christmas Thompson succeeded as the head of Warrington’s School of Art in 1855. Born and educated in Carlisle, he had studied both at the Royal Institution in Edinburgh and at the School of Practical Art in London. When he became head of the School of Art it was still based in the Mechanics’ Institute in the Warrington Academy buildings. Under his direction the School moved into the new Museum and Library building in 1857. After nearly 30 years as head, Thompson took the opportunity to retire when the new Art School building opened across the street from the museum building in 1884.
