Jimmy Dyer was a beloved member of Carlisle's community in the nineteenth century. Born in 1841 in Carlisle, he undertook a brief stint in the navy before being discharged, after which, following a period of intense practice on the violin, becoming well-known as the town's fiddler and singer – playing comic ballads both on the street and at festive gatherings.

This statue, created by local sculptor Judith Bluck, commemorates the fiddler, sitting proudly in the Lanes Shopping Centre. Dyer is depicted sat on a four-tiered, irregular quadrilateral base, his fiddle in his left hand while his right clutches the bow. He is clothed in a somewhat tatty suit and top hat, the curling locks of his beard escaping over his collar. Despite, when initially erected in 1986 undergoing bouts of vandalism, the sculpture is now a much-loved public feature, and is a fitting commemoration to the locally famed travelling musician.
