Socialist politician, author and powerful orator. In 1916 Maxton was imprisoned for sedition as a result of calling for a General Strike on the Clyde. In 1919 he became an organiser for the Independent Labour Party and served as ILP Member for Bridgeton (1922–1945). During his Chairmanship of the the Party (1926–1931 and 1934–1939), the ILP disaffiliated from the Labour Party (1932); after his death the ILP declined and by 1950 had no MPs.
