Born in Warrington, James Hatton worked in the iron trade with his brother William in Salford and took over the business on his brother's death in 1833. He was also director of the Manchester and Salford Bank and director of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway for over 30 years. He was elected first Church Warden of Manchester in 1840. He made donations to many charities including £10,000 to Warrington Infirmary.
