The artist studied at Leeds College of Art, and taught for two years at Harrogate School of Art before moving to Cornwall in 1955. After taking an Italian Art Scholarship (1958–1959) and a painting prize at the Paris Biennale (1959), he was Gregory Fellow in Painting at the University of Leeds from 1960–1963. In the early 1970s, he moved to the USA, and taught for 25 years at Florida State University. He returned to Cornwall in 1996. 'To Tuscany', together with another work 'Italian', were bought by Stanley Burton from the artist's second one-man show at Waddington’s in London in February 1960 (the first was in 1958). Both paintings were selected for the Arts Council exhibition ‘The Gregory Fellows’ in 1964. As its name suggests, the painting has a relation to landscape, but to its elemental forces rather than its topography, which seem to equate with the internal dynamics of the painting, or the mechanism of painting itself.
