Isabella Johnson was the last owner of Ayscoughfee Hall & Gardens, before it passed into public ownership in 1898. The Johnson family owned Ayscoughfee from the mid-17th century, and carried out significant developments of both the Hall and the Gardens. From 1688, each owner of Ayscoughfee was named Maurice (family name given to the first-born son), with six generations of Maurice and their families living here. Isabella Johnson, née Swan (1826–1905) was the second wife of Maurice Johnson VI (1815–1864), and lived at Ayscoughfee until the 1850s, when the family moved to Suffolk following the death of one of their daughters in an accident. However, the Johnson family continued to own the site, leasing it to a series of tenants until Isabella sold the estate to the people of Spalding for £2,000, with the money raised by public subscription.
