From the early 1890s to c.1905, under the influence of meetings in France with Paul Sérusier, Paul Gauguin and Edouard Vuillard, Mackie was fascinated by Symbolism with its emphasis on decoration and outline. By the time of his visit to Venice in 1908, however, he had largely abandoned Symbolism. In this sketch he depicts a much-visited corner of the city with its strollers and café-goers and captures the magic of a summer evening in patches of colour that contrast light and shadow, warmth and coolness. The final large painting, exhibited in 1910, is now in the City of Edinburgh Art Collection together with another small oil sketch similar to this one.
