Self-taught artist John Allin made his mark within what is today considered the Folk/Outsider Art movement in Britain, adopting a naive style and drawing on memories of his East End childhood to capture a fast-disappearing era.

This imagined scene depicts the Hessel Street market in its heyday when it was at the heart of London's Jewish East End. It is early morning and as the newspaper boy makes his deliveries, the stallholders begin to set up their various fruit and veg or clothing stands. Around them, the shops – most bearing Jewish names, such as Rappaport, Green, Skeil and Woolf and offering goods including kosher meat and fish – begin to unwind their awnings, ready for the business of the day.
