The mural charts Southampton’s history from Roman times to the twentieth century. It includes reference to the maritime and aeronautical achievements. Collins and Pallot, a husband and wife team of artists from Colchester, Essex, made public art for the Festival of Britain in 1951 and in subsequent years completed many murals on public and commercial buildings. The mural was originally located on the facade of Sainsburys in the Lordshill area of Southampton. Stored out of the public gaze for 20 years (from 1990), the mural was repaired (by Oliver Budd) in 2010, cleaned, and re-installed in Hamtun Street.
