George I was king of Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover. He was the great grandson of James I. He succeeded to the throne in 1714 but spent as much time in Hanover as Britain, leaving his son, Prince George, as Regent in his absence. He died of apoplexy at Osnabruck in 1727 and was buried at Hanover.
