Sir Geoffrey Organe was one of the most widely known and respected anaesthetists of his generation. He was born on Christmas Day in 1908 in Madras, India. He was educated at Taunton School and at Christ's College, Cambridge, and Westminster Medical School. In 1938 he was appointed the first registrar in anaesthetics at Westminster. After a period in general practice he was elected to the consultant staff of his hospital and spent the rest of his professional life there, becoming the Foundation Professor in Anaesthetics at Westminster Medical School. His contributions to anaesthesia nationally and internationally were immense. He served on, or chaired, virtually every major anaesthetic committee and organisation. He was Vice President of the BMA's section of anaesthetics in 1949, President of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists, a member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons, President of the section of anaesthetics of the Royal Society of Medicine, President of the Association of Anaesthetists, Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, and for many years an examiner for the FFARCS.
