In this staged photograph, artist Yinka Shonibare (b. London, United Kingdom) takes centre stage dressed in Regency period costume, in the historical guise of an upper-class gentleman complete with embroidered waistcoat, frilled cuffs and powdered wig. 'Effnik' is one of a series of images, consisting of three elaborately staged large-scale colour portraits in Baroque frames. Playfully questioning the notions of 'Englishness' and personas, these portraits directly reference a time of great social change in Britain, and its global expansion during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
