Set within a rectangular foiled panel, Matthew is seated at a desk and writing with a quill facing right. Above him, the hand of God signifies divine inspiration. On the left of the panel are traces of red paint.

One of four panels depicting the four evangelists, all carved in the same hand, from Fountains Abbey. They possibly derived from two separate retables. All four are deeply chased on the back, perhaps showing that both retables were fitted into timber screens or reredos.
