The Balkan Wars, over a decade-long period between 1991 and 2001, led to the disintegration of the former Republic of Yugoslavia and ultimately affected all six former Yugoslav republics.
The Falmouth painting is the second in the series and was painted in 1994. Like Sir Terry Frost, much of Grace’s work is joyful. But in the Jugoslavia Series she attacks the canvas with vigour. Her use of colour, although vibrant, is also disturbing, reflecting the horrors of war.
In titling the work Grace was insistent that name was spelt in the traditional way with a ‘J’.
