The figure stands on a pedestal at the centre of a concave stone bay, in front of the grounds to the Derby Royal Infirmary. From 1904 until the 1970s The Nightingale Home was a maternity hospital. Initially, it was set up as a private nursing and midwifery hospital run by the Royal Derby and Derbyshire Nursing and Sanitary Association. From 1948 it operated as an NHS maternity institute – the ‘Nightingale Home for Maternity Cases’. In the 1980s it became a hospice for the Nightingale Macmillan Unit, which has since moved to the new Royal Derby Hospital. The site has been boarded up since 2009.
