The statue commemorates the ‘fine lady’ in the ‘Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross’ nursery rhyme. She is depicted as the Queen of the May riding side-saddle on a Welsh cob on top of a rectangular stone plinth. She has rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and wears a crown of spring flowers. The lady drops petals from her raised left hand, a sign of prosperity and this counterbalances the raised right leg of the horse. A small frog at the base represents metamorphosis, the cycle of nature and community. The nursery rhyme appears on a bronze plaque around the four sides of the plinth.
