In the choir of a Gothic cathedral a painter, dressed in fourteenth century Italian costume, has fallen to his knees, we suppose, to confess his love to a beautiful young nun, who is sitting in a high armchair. This romantic scene can be interpreted as Filippo Lippi paying court to Lucrezia, daughter of Francesco Buti, who was a novice in the convent where he was painting, and who, according to the story of the life of the painter in the Vite of Vasari, subsequently ran away with her admirer to live with him and give life to their son Filippino Lippi.
