An oak statue of a man, possibly intended to depict William Shakespeare. The statue is roughly carved, probably English and made in the nineteenth century. The man has a pointed beard in the Elizabethan style. He wears a shirt with a wide collar, a coat, breeches which end at the knee and a pair of simple round-toed shoes with buckles. In his left hand he holds a piece of paper, inscribed with a slight variation of a passage from William Shakespeare's play, 'Hamlet', in which Hamlet laments the loss of his father in Act 1, Scene 2: 'He was a man. Take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again.' A metal ring is attached to the top of the figure's head.
