A large arched and carved stone doorway consisting of a semicircular decorative border rising from the jambs, surmounted by a deep projecting entablature. Each of the jambs contains a full-length female figure standing on a plinth inside a small niche. The decorative border carries a set of eight male heads set into roundels, interspersed with a design of leaves in low relief. The spandrels either side of the arch each contain a relief decoration of a bird and rose on the right side, and a snake and rose on the left. The eight heads refer to pre-Christian lawgivers (Moses, Solomon, Lycurcus, Justinian) and Christian law-givers (Charlemagne, Alfred, Edward the Confessor and Edward I). The two female figures are allegorical representations of Justice and Mercy.
