information board : This historic square served as the sheep marker from 1781 to 1895 and reflects the town's / historic links with the wool trade. / in 1290 the funeral cortege of Queen Eleanor wife of King edward I, passed through / Stamford on its way from Harby, near Lincln, to Westminster Abbey. At each of the twelve / stops along the route the King commissioned a memorial. Apart from a stone rose there is / no trace of the Stamford Eleanor Cross. but the poignant story served as the inspiration for this graceful spire with its rose motif which was erected in 2008.
