Inspired by the story of the Cortege of Queen Eleanor passing through Stamford in 1290, the elegant spire was erected in 2009. It 'celebrates love, longing and remembrance in the form of a spire' with a stone at the base rising into a bronze tip.

information board : This historic square served as the sheep marker from 1781 to 1895 and reflects the town's / historic links with the wool trade. / in 1290 the funeral cortege of Queen Eleanor wife of King edward I, passed through / Stamford on its way from Harby, near Lincln, to Westminster Abbey. At each of the twelve / stops along the route the King commissioned a memorial. Apart from a stone rose there is / no trace of the Stamford Eleanor Cross. but the poignant story served as the inspiration for this graceful spire with its rose motif which was erected in 2008.
