Cairns is a painter of Scottish scenes and portraits in densely packed autobiographical works. During the 1970s she painted many mythological themes often treated in a pseudo-religious manner using the format of altarpieces. She has been influenced by the example of German painting between the wars, not only Beckman and Dix, but also George Grosz. On returning to live in the north east of Scotland in 1976 she began to paint the community life and work of her surroundings. For the past 20 years Cairns has resided in the picturesque village of Footdee, which is located at the mouth of Aberdeen Harbour. Her pictures are peopled with sailors, glimpses of harbours and characters from her life.
