The artwork depicts the figure of a miner walking with his son, both holding miner's lamps. The father's hand rests reassuringly on his son's flat cap with the words 'Don't worry son, it's just a hole in the ground where you'll find your roots'. The town of Swadlincote and the surrounding districts were once heavy coal mining areas. The mines are now closed.
