Four inscriptions on surrounding paving stones read: The east wind whets me for my task, / A ship to float or land to till, / And echo surges from the past, / "You've clay to dig and bricks to kiln." / Anointed with an honest sweat / I've cloth toake and coal to hew / From giving play and rest I turn / The world to hark and malt to brew / May all the fields plough themselves, / May all the fish jump on the shore, / May I lie down upon my back / And sleep sound for evermore / Oh, grant me then the heavy seam, / The golden bere, the silver fleece, / The thankful heart, the willing hand, / God's benison of work and peace.
