This design relates to the scheme of dado to ceiling murals painted in 1928 by Roger Bland as part of the refurbishment of the historic brewhouse at Kenwood as a café. Painted in cobalt blue against a cream ground in imitation of ‘willow pattern’ porcelain, the murals covered the north, west and south walls. This design, showing the north front of Kenwood with coach and horses before the door and figures in eighteenth-century dress in the foreground, was intended for the west wall. On the north and south walls were depictions of Highgate and Hampstead, respectively. The decoration with murals of the newly styled Brewhouse café at Kenwood coincided with a general revival in mural painting in both public and private spaces, such as those executed by Rex Whistler for the Tate Gallery restaurant (1926–1927) and the decorative panels by Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious for the walls of the refectory of London’s Morley College (1930).
