Culwch and Olwen, a Welsh tale about a hero connected to Arthur and his warriors, survives in two medieval manuscripts, probably the earliest extant Welsh prose texts. The artist was from Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, and taught art at Queen Elizabeth Boys Grammar School, Carmarthen. He produced many pleasant watercolours of scenes in Carmarthenshire. This large canvas, containing scenes of homoerotic symbolism intertwined with the narrative of a Welsh folk tale, is atypical of his work. He was also a poet and a playwright, writing in English and Welsh.
