This crucifix once stood over the tabernacle of a church in Verdun, France. The church was destroyed during the First World War during a bombardment. After the battle, the parish priest found the pieces of a broken cross in the ruins. He asked Sister Marguerite (formerly Emily Corballis), a Sister of Charity nun and Red Cross nurse, to help put the pieces back together. She persuaded some wounded German soldiers in the hospital in Verdun to repair the crucifix.
