The work is cut in outline to the shape of the Cromarty headland, with the text of an 1854 quote from Hugh Miller's autobiography 'My Schools and Schoolmasters' beginning '...I HAD TO BUILD THEM UP / PLATE BY PLATE'. It is cut between areas of carved waving lines, representing Cromarty Bay, or Lake Orkadie which the area formed part of 350 million years ago. The figure of a fossil fish, Pterichthyodes milleri, is in higher relief to the lower right.
