This painting relates to Gauld’s 'St Agnes' (National Galleries of Scotland) and 'Music' (private collection), which are unequalled in the story of the Glasgow Boys for their reliance on the symbolic effect of colour and line. By the end of 1888 Gauld, who was working as an illustrator for the 'Glasgow Weekly Citizen', was very much involved with the design and manufacture of stained glass panels in Glasgow. He translated some of the new imagery he had devised for his panels into designs for canvas and, perhaps more importantly, he also transferred the colours and glass painting techniques to his new easel paintings.
