The Dutch artist Jacob de Heusch made a living by painting Italian-style landscapes. It was common for educated and wealthy people to travel to Italy to see the classical sights. Some of the ancient sculptures and buildings had only recently been rediscovered. The artist probably travelled to Italy to see the sights for himself. However the scenery in this painting does not show a real landscape. It has been painted back in his Dutch studio from his imagination. The owner of the picture may not have been to Italy but he wanted to give the impression that he was educated and well travelled.
