Scott was the editor of ‘The Manchester Guardian’ for 57 years from 1872 to 1929. On the death of (John) Edward Taylor (the son of the founder), Scott bought the business for £240,000, putting himself in considerable debt. He took the paper from respectable provinciality to the status of a journal with a worldwide reputation.

This work was commissioned by the staffs of 'The Manchester Guardian' and 'The Manchester Evening News' as a tribute to their recently deceased former editor.
