Sir Charles Inglis held the Professorship (renamed in 1934 as the Professorship of Mechanical Sciences) from 1919 to 1940, although he remained Head of Department during the Second World War until 1943. This portrait was painted in 1926 by D. Gordon Shields. Inglis had been one of Bertram Hopkinson's lecturers and he had a wide range of interests in civil, mechanical and military engineering. During the half century from 1890 to 1943 under the leadership of Ewing, Hopkinson and Inglis, the teaching of engineering in Cambridge (as in the country as a whole) changed very little. However, the Department had increased greatly in size and moved from Free School Lane to the present Scroope House site.
