This portrait of Cecile was painted a year after her death. Ceci met Hilda Goldwag when they were both refugees. Cecile born Cacilie Zoe Schwartzchild was born 12th May 1914 in Koenig, Germany into the Jewish family of Kaufmann Mauritz and Recha Schwartzchild. Ceci met Hilda at the Quakers Friends Meeting House in Edinburgh in 1939. When war broke out both women were required to relocate to Glasgow where they did war work at McLashlan Engineering Works. After the war Ceci worked as a tobacconist's assistant. Ceci applied for naturalisation and was granted British citizenship in March 1960. Ceci’s brother Leo survived the Holcaust. Ceci’s sister Ruth died. Ruth Schwarzschild was born in Koenig in 1919, and during the Second World War was in the Netherlands. Ruth was murdered in 1943 at Auschwitz..
